What a Flameproof Panel Is, and How We Build It

A flameproof (explosion-proof) panel is built for areas where flammable gases, vapours or dust can be present — its enclosure is designed to contain an internal spark or explosion so it cannot ignite the surrounding atmosphere. Wisdom Techno Solutions builds these panels for Zone 1 and Zone 2 hazardous areas: we source ATEX/IECEx-certified flameproof (Ex d) enclosures from specialist enclosure manufacturers, and carry out the component mounting, wiring, assembly and testing at our Vadodara works — within the enclosure manufacturer's documentation.

One thing we say plainly, because it matters at tender stage: the certificate belongs to the enclosure, for a stated zone and gas group — the panel builder's job is to build within that enclosure's certified envelope and documentation. When you evaluate any hazardous-area panel vendor, ask whose certificate covers the enclosure and what zone and gas group it states. That question separates a real hazardous-area build from an ordinary panel in a heavy box.

  • Zone 1 panels — areas where explosive gas is likely during normal operation
  • Zone 2 panels — areas where explosive gas is unlikely and short-lived
  • Certified Ex d enclosures from specialist manufacturers, matched to your area classification
  • Internal wiring and assembly at the WTS works, per the enclosure documentation
  • Certified cable glands and entries — the detail where hazardous-area builds most often go wrong
  • Motor starters, distribution and control circuits engineered to your single line diagram

Flameproof Panel Technical Specifications

The table below is the standard scope. The enclosure certification — zone, gas group, temperature class — is selected to match your site's area classification documents.

ParameterSpecification
Panel type Flameproof / explosion-proof control and distribution panels for hazardous (classified) areas
Areas served Zone 1 (explosive gas likely in normal operation) and Zone 2 (explosive gas unlikely, short duration)
Enclosure ATEX/IECEx-certified flameproof (Ex d) enclosures sourced from specialist enclosure manufacturers
Certification principle The certificate belongs to the enclosure, issued by its manufacturer's notified body, for a stated zone and gas group
Gas group / zone Per the sourced enclosure's certification, matched to your area classification
Internal assembly Component mounting, wiring and testing at the WTS works, within the enclosure manufacturer's documentation
Typical contents Motor starters, distribution feeders, control and instrumentation circuits, junction terminations
Typical industries Chemicals and petrochemicals, oil & gas, solvent handling, pharma processing areas
Cable entry Certified cable glands per the enclosure documentation and the site's cable schedule
Rated voltage up to 690 V AC, 50 Hz
Non-hazardous scope Where the panel itself sits in a safe area feeding hazardous-area circuits, standard IEC 61439 construction applies
Testing Routine tests and inspection at the works before dispatch, with test report
Facility Kotambi, Vadodara, Gujarat, India
Delivery 6 to 7 weeks from drawing approval, subject to switchgear availability

Zone 1 vs Zone 2 — What Your Area Classification Means

Zone 1Zone 2
Gas presenceLikely during normal operationUnlikely; short duration if it occurs
Typical locationsAround process vessels, pumps, solvent chargingPeripheral areas, ventilated buildings adjacent to process
Equipment demandHigher — certified for Zone 1 dutyZone 2-certified equipment acceptable
Who decidesThe site's hazardous area classification study — not the panel vendorSame

The zone comes from your site's hazardous-area classification drawings, prepared by the process licensor or consultant. Send those drawings with the enquiry — the enclosure certification is then matched to them, not assumed.

The Honest Alternative: Panel in the Safe Area

Not every hazardous-area load needs a hazardous-area panel. Often the better engineering is a standard MCC or distribution panel in a safe-area electrical room, feeding the classified area through certified glands and barriers — cheaper to build, far cheaper to maintain, and every component is standard. We will tell you honestly, from your layout, when that architecture serves you better than a flameproof panel in the field. Where the panel must stand in the classified area, the certified-enclosure build above is the correct route.

What to Send for a Flameproof Panel Quotation

The hazardous area classification drawings (zone, gas group, temperature class), the single line diagram and feeder list for the panel, the mounting location and environment, the cable schedule for certified gland selection, and any client or consultant specification the build must satisfy. Send them through the Get a Quote form.

How Wisdom Techno Solutions Builds Hazardous-Area Panels

The enclosure arrives certified from its manufacturer; our works does what a panel builder must do well — engineering the internals to your single line diagram, mounting and wiring within the enclosure manufacturer's documentation, using certified glands and entries, and routine testing before dispatch with the test report shipped. Drawings are approved before manufacturing, and the enclosure's certification documents travel with the panel's documentation package.

Frequently Asked Questions About Flameproof & Explosion-Proof Panels

What is a flameproof or explosion-proof panel?
A panel built for hazardous (classified) areas where flammable gases, vapours or dust can be present. Its flameproof (Ex d) enclosure is designed to contain an internal spark or explosion so it cannot ignite the surrounding atmosphere. The panel is used where the equipment must stand inside the classified area itself.
Are your panels ATEX certified?
The certification belongs to the enclosure, not to the panel builder — and we state that plainly. We source ATEX/IECEx-certified flameproof enclosures from specialist enclosure manufacturers, for the zone and gas group your area classification requires, and carry out the internal assembly, wiring and testing at our works within the enclosure manufacturer's documentation. The enclosure's certification documents ship with the panel.
What is the difference between Zone 1 and Zone 2?
Zone 1 is an area where explosive gas is likely to be present during normal operation; Zone 2 is an area where it is unlikely and short-lived if it occurs. The zone comes from your site's hazardous-area classification study. We build panels for both, with the enclosure certification matched to the stated zone and gas group.
Which industries use flameproof panels?
Chemicals and petrochemicals, oil and gas, solvent handling and storage, and pharmaceutical processing areas — anywhere the process creates a classified atmosphere and electrical equipment must operate inside it.
Do I always need a flameproof panel for a hazardous area?
No — and this is worth real money. Often the better engineering is a standard panel in a safe-area electrical room feeding the classified area through certified glands and barriers. It is cheaper to build and maintain, and every component is standard. We recommend honestly from your layout; the flameproof build is for cases where the panel must stand in the classified area.
What decides the gas group and temperature class?
Your site's hazardous-area classification documents — prepared by the process licensor or consultant — state the zone, gas group and temperature class. The certified enclosure is selected to match those documents. The panel vendor should never be the one assuming them.
What is inside a flameproof panel?
Whatever the duty requires — motor starters, distribution feeders, control and instrumentation circuits, junction terminations — engineered to your single line diagram, mounted and wired within the certified enclosure per its manufacturer's documentation, with certified cable glands on every entry.
What should I send to get a quotation?
The hazardous-area classification drawings with zone, gas group and temperature class, the single line diagram and feeder list, the mounting location, the cable schedule, and any client or consultant specification — through the Get a Quote form.
