What VFD and Soft Starter Panels Are, and What We Build
A VFD panel and a soft starter panel are two different answers to the same problem — starting and running a motor without damaging it. A variable frequency drive varies both the frequency and the voltage supplied to the motor, giving full speed control, smooth acceleration, reduced mechanical stress and real energy saving on variable-torque loads such as pumps and fans. A soft starter ramps the voltage up gradually, giving a controlled start and reduced electrical and mechanical stress — but no speed control once the motor is running.
Wisdom Techno Solutions builds both at our Vadodara works — as standalone panels, or as VFD and soft-starter feeders inside an MCC or PMCC lineup. Drive make follows the plant's automation standard; cooling is sized to the drive's actual heat dissipation; and where the installation needs them, line chokes, dV/dt filters and bypass arrangements are engineered in rather than bolted on later.
- VFD panels — speed control, smooth acceleration, energy saving on pumps, fans and compressors
- Soft starter panels — controlled starting where speed control is not needed
- Bypass arrangements — DOL or soft-starter bypass so the motor still runs if the drive is down
- Harmonic mitigation — line chokes and dV/dt filters where cable runs and supply demand them
- Cooling engineered to the drive's dissipation — the most common cause of drive panel failure is heat
- Standalone panels or feeders inside an MCC / PMCC, to IEC 61439-1 and -2 practice
VFD and Soft Starter Panel Technical Specifications
The table below is the standard build. Drive rating, cooling, filters and bypass are set from the motor schedule, the load type and the site supply.
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Panel type | VFD panel (full speed control) or soft starter panel (controlled starting), standalone or as feeders inside an MCC / PMCC |
| What a VFD does | Varies both frequency and voltage to the motor — full speed control, smooth acceleration, energy saving on variable-torque loads |
| What a soft starter does | Ramps the voltage up gradually — limits the starting current surge and mechanical stress; no speed control once running |
| Rated voltage | up to 690 V AC, 50 Hz |
| Motor range | Sized to the motor schedule — single drive panels to multi-feeder lineups |
| Drive / starter makes | Per the plant's automation standard — major makes supported |
| Protection | MCCB or MPCB per feeder, overload protection, drive fault interlocks |
| Cooling | Ventilation or forced cooling sized to the drive heat dissipation |
| Harmonic mitigation | Line chokes, dV/dt filters and harmonic filters where the installation requires them |
| Bypass | DOL or soft-starter bypass arrangements built in where specified |
| Enclosure | Powder-coated CRCA sheet steel; IP42–IP54 typical for drive panels |
| Assembly practice | IEC 61439-1 and IEC 61439-2 practice |
| Testing | Routine tests and inspection at the works before dispatch, with test report |
| Facility | Kotambi, Vadodara, Gujarat, India |
| Delivery | 6 to 7 weeks from drawing approval, subject to switchgear availability |
VFD vs Soft Starter — Which One Does Your Motor Need?
| Soft Starter | VFD | |
|---|---|---|
| Starting | Controlled voltage ramp — soft start and stop | Fully controlled acceleration from zero |
| Running | Full speed only | Any speed — continuous control |
| Energy saving | None while running | Substantial on variable-torque loads (pumps, fans) |
| Cost | Lower | Higher — recovered through energy saving where the load varies |
| Best for | Loads that start hard but run at one speed | Loads whose demand varies through the day |
The practical rule: if the process needs the motor to run at different speeds — or the load is a pump or fan whose demand varies — the VFD pays for itself; if the motor only needs a gentle start and then runs flat out, the soft starter does the job at lower cost. The full decision logic, with DOL and star-delta included, is in our starter selection guide and soft starter vs VFD guide.
Standalone Panel or Feeders Inside the MCC?
A single large drive — a big compressor, an ID fan — usually gets its own panel, engineered around that drive's cooling and cable requirements. Multiple motor feeders with mixed starting methods belong inside an MCC or PMCC, where DOL, star-delta, soft-starter and VFD feeders share one busbar and one incomer. Both routes are built at the same works to the same IEC 61439 discipline — the choice is layout and maintenance philosophy, and we will recommend honestly from your single line diagram.
What to Send for a VFD / Soft Starter Panel Quotation
The motor schedule (kW, voltage, full-load current, starting duty), the load type (pump, fan, compressor, conveyor…), the preferred drive make if the plant has a standard, cable distance from panel to motor (it decides the dV/dt filter), and whether a bypass is required. Send them through the Get a Quote form.
Common Mistakes in Drive Panel Specifications
- Cooling ignored — a drive de-rates and trips in an under-ventilated panel; heat is the number-one killer of drive panels
- Long motor cables without dV/dt filters — reflected-wave voltage spikes damage motor insulation; see our harmonics and filter guide
- No bypass on critical motors — when the drive fails, the process stops with it; see the bypass interlocking guide
- Soft starter chosen for a variable load — the energy saving of a VFD is then thrown away every running hour
- Harmonics unaddressed on sites with many drives — line chokes cost little at build time
How Wisdom Techno Solutions Builds Drive Panels
Drive panels are built at the Kotambi works to IEC 61439-1 and -2 practice: heat-dissipation calculations per our cooling guide methodology, segregated power and control wiring, GA and SLD drawings approved before manufacturing, and routine tests including functional checks of the drive, protections and interlocks before dispatch — test report shipped with the panel.
